| Eureka City Council and Wiyot Tribal Council, May 18, 2004 |
 |
History was made Tuesday, May 18, 2004, when the
Eureka City Council took formal action to
transfer a portion of Indian Island to the Table
Bluff Reservation-Wiyot Tribe. The land is that
portion of the island east of state Highway 255
(Samoa Bridge).
The village of Tuluwat on Indian Island is the
physical and spiritual center of the Wiyot world,
once comprising as many as 20 villages spread
over the surrounding 40 square miles.
The Wiyot intend to construct a cultural center
at the site.
The action taken by the City Council is the
culmination of many years of discussions
concerning the future ownership of the easterly
portion of Indian Island.
Tribal leaders and City Council (above) join
together in celebration of this momentous
occasion.
