About The Eureka Fire Department:

Station 1 (Headquarters)Welcome!

Founded in 1861, the Eureka Fire Department has since evolved into a full service municipal fire department and regional emergency response agency. From its humble beginnings, the agency now serves the citizens of Eureka and surrounding communities from three stations, with a Marine division charged with the protection of Humboldt Bay's extensive waterfront, and a regional Hazardous Materials Response Team.

As the largest non-volunteer municipal Fire Department for Station 3over 150 miles in any direction, the Department faces a number of challenges in providing for the public safety: pre-1900 multi-story wooden structures; unreinforced masonry buildings; a deep-water port; and woodlands reaching into the City. Despite the additional challenges presented by this era of budgetary constraints, the Department strives to Station 4provide the level of service usually only found in major metropolitan areas to the residents of our City. We do so by taking advantage of the latest techniques; constant training; and the dedication of all of our personnel. Organization and administration play a part as well, with several Bureaus and Programs in existance that enable us to maximize the efficiency of our operations.

Department Programs/Bureaus:

  • Fire Prevention Bureau-Responsible for Fire Education, inspections, building plan checks, and fire/arson investigations.
  • Operations-Training, Emergency Operations and special projects.
  • Hazardous Materials-Maintains and staffs the Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team.
  • Marine-Provides protection to the communities deep water port facilities with the Department's dedicated '40 fireboat (Marine 1).
  • Volunteers-Oversees the training and operations of a core group of Volunteer Firefighters, who supplement the career staff. Training goals are for each Volunteer to obtain both Firefighter 1 and EMT 1 certifications in addition to their on-going training.
  • Emergency Operations Center-Coordinates and directs the City of Eureka's Emergency Operations Center-located in the E.F.D. Headquarters facility-during a City or Regional emergency.
