Dexterity, expressiveness, and intelligence are significant elements of chimpanzee artistry.

Chimpanzees are highly complex and intelligent animals. Each chimpanzee has uniquely individual personalities, preferences and other personal traits. Close association between many aspects of chimpanzee and human societies have been noted. As with all of the Zoo animals, stimulating enrichment materials are regularly provided to Bill for interest and fulfillment. One noteworthy enrichment that he has recently been associated with was the production of watercolor paintings such as this example. His watercolors have received some enthusiastic responses from critics.

SOPHISTICATED SOCIETIES

In evolving a variety of complex behavioral, social, and physical adaptations to their environment, Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) have developed advanced and intricate systems of social living. Community order is maintained through facial expressions, gestures and vocalizations, grooming, dominance displays, social status, and other customs of conduct. Their intelligence and dexterity are the basis for the close association between many aspects of chimpanzee and human societies. Group members are solicitous of one another, cooperate to hunt and obtain food, patrol and defend territory, protect and care for young. Prior to the discovery that chimpanzees made and used primitive tools, humans were thought to be the only species that could do so.
